AN EARLY AND SERENDIPITOUS START TO THE CPD YEAR

It was far from planned! The chance discovery that Dr Sanju Sobnach Is a newly trained liver and kidney transplant and that he was spending a few weeks in Mauritius with his family led to our first CPD meeting where he recounted his recent fascinating experience as a trainee transplant surgeon as well as his views on how kidney transplant could be relauched in Mauritius after hiatus of 4 years. Dr Davy Ip opened the evening with a quick review of the state of kidney disease and history of kidney transplantation in Mauritius.
The Renal Association was honoured by the attendance of the Honorable Dr Kailash Jagutpal, the Minister of Health and Wellness, and several senior officials from the ministry.

The Renal Association was represented by Dr D Ip Min Wan, Dr O Bheekharry and Dr M Rughooputh at the World Congress of Nephrology in New Delhi on 6-9 February 2025. They were involved in several important events.

Dr D Ip representing Mauritius and the RA at the Affiliated Societies Gathering of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) at the WCN’25 in New Delhi. The RA has been a collective-member society member of the ISN since November 2020.

Dr D Ip, as an ISN member, has made use of the Sister Renal Centre of the ISN, to team up with Dr J Baharani of the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (UK) to improve kidney patient care and especially peritoneal dialysis in Mauritius.

Dr D Ip as one of the two Mauritian members of ISN Africa Regional Board, member of African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN) attended the meeting of the ISN Africa Regional Board which was already affected by the outgoing ISN President Pr Masaomi Nangaku, incoming ISN President Pr Marcello Tonelli and the AFRAN President Prof Mohammed Hany Hafez.

The signing of the agreement between ISN and AFRAN to collaborate on training of new nephrologists in Africa at the the meeting of the ISN Africa Regional Board at WCN’25.

Meeting of the the ISN Sharing Expertise to Support the set-up of Renal Registries (SharE-RR) initiative which develops resources to help establish or develop renal registries in emerging countries including a toolkit introduced in 2024. Efforts have been made since 2020 to set a renal registry in Mauritius but obstacles remain.

This poster is the result of the multidisciplinary team at the Transplant Unit at Victoria Hospital and at all the Haemodialysis Units in all the public hospitals in Mauritius. It is the first clinical data on transplant workup from Mauritius and it has been published in Kidney International Reports in February 2025.

The Renal Association (of Mauritius) is a group of health professionals working together to improve the care of patients with kidney disease by promoting the highest standard of medical practice. Our focus is Mauritius but we form part of the global nephrology community through our affiliation of the International Society of Nephrology. We welcome all interested team members working and training in clinical care of kidney patients and related fields as well as doing research in kidney disease.
What is Nephrology?
Nephrology is a specialty of medicine focused on the kidneys, specifically normal kidney function, the preservation of kidney health, and kidney disease and its treatment, from diet and medication to dialysis and kidney transplantation. Find out more.
